E!: Back in 1978, David James Elliott was well on his way to becoming just another high school dropout. But David got his act together, offscreen and on.

Nanci: Who would've thought? I keep looking at him now and I go, "Wow, who would've thought?"

DJE: I really just want to be the best that I can be. I want to be the best actor that I can be. I want to be the best father and the best husband that I can be. And that's the important stuff to me.

E!: Solid down home values from a man who's joined the ranks of Tinseltown's brightest stars. But if you look beyond the veneer of Hollywood, you can still spot the rock 'n roll rebel in David's winning smile and a glimmer of the shy lad from Milton in those beautiful baby blues.

Frank Lippai: He's still Dave to us no matter what he does. And he makes sure of that as well.

Pat: He's still the David that I raised. He's still ... how can I say this without sounding corny? ....He's not David James Elliott; he's David Smith. He's still himself. You couldn't ask for anything more than that.

DJE: It's all been great. I wouldn't change anything. It's all been ... the good and the bad ... have all been great. It's always been interesting.

Nanci: David to me has had the hardest time getting to where he is. And I think people probably look at him and go, "Oh he's handsome. He's probably came really easy." He's had an incredible struggle. When we ran out of everything, I would tap him on the shoulder and say, "Just be persistent 'cause it's not going to go away. Don't let them take it away from you."

DJE: "He who unceasingly strives upward, him we can save," as Nietzsche said. And that's my philosophy. Never say die. As long as you're in the game, you still have a shot at winning.

Pat: I'm happy for him because he's found happiness in life. I hope he'll always be happy and I love him very much.

John Frizzell: Yeah, David was wild and great fun. Why do you think he has so many friends? David was a blast. And that can sometimes mean losing your pants in odd situations. But I'm not telling you about it.

DJE: Everybody I used to know is either dead or in prison. No, that's not true. It sounds good. [laughing]
