Sindelar is just as good: Before Phil Mickelson was switched out of the celebrity field, he was scheduled to play with “JAG” star David James Elliott and Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson.

Swapping places with Mickelson was Joey Sindelar.

Elliott kept his good humor about the situation.

"We’re glad we got to play with Joey. We didn’t want to play with Phil," Elliott said. "Joey is a much nicer guy. I think I made (Mickelson) nervous, so he had to switch up."

Elliott admitted he was disappointed he didn’t play with the defending champion, but he was impressed with Sindelar.

"You play with these guys and they’re all amazing," Elliott said. "It’s just a thrill, that’s why I love it here. You get to play with a different player every day. I don’t follow any sport except golf, so this is my Super Bowl."

Looking for Mickelson: When David James Elliott’s caddy Matt Sigloch found out they were paired with Phil Mickelson for the first day of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, he got really excited.

Sigloch, who is also the technical director for Elliott’s hit series “JAG,” has a 4-year-old son, Nikolas, who is an aspiring golfer. Nikolas is also a lefty, just like Mickelson.

Sigloch was hoping Mickelson would autograph three pictures of Nikolas hitting a golf ball.

But Mickelson, the defending champion and No. 3-ranked golfer in the world, switched out of the celebrity group.

Sigloch, however, keeps bringing his son’s photos with him just in case.

“I keep hoping it will happen, but ...” Sigloch said.
