Elliott's Ship Comes In
Australia, June 1997

When Julia Louis-Dreyfus opened the door to Moving Guy Carl on Seinfeld, she had no idea she was opening countless others for the man who played him, David James Elliott. At least, that's the way the actor, now famous as JAG's handsome naval Lt.Cdr. Harmon Rabb Jr. sees it.

"I had always made a good living doing drama, but I learnt that if you do a comedy, the whole world opens up," explains the man lucky enough to have dated Elaine on screen.

Despite portraying a multiple addict on Melrose Place and having bit-parts in high-profile shows like Doogie Howser, M.D., China Beach and Knots Landing, it wasn't until Seinfeld and then JAG that David stopped chasing work and it began chasing him.

"I get a lot of offers, and don't have to go to auditions any more," he smiles. "I'm not begging for work as much as work is beginning to beg for me."

As well as playing the lawyer and officer in the navy's Judge Advocate General Corps, David is keen to develop other ideas he has in mind for film and television. But his work schedule leaves him little enough time for his wife, actor Nancy Chambers, and their four-year-old daughter, Stephanie, let alone go out looking for extra work.

"Right now I'm shooting 15-hour days, six times a week, and then on weekends I have to do publicity just to keep the whole machine running smoothly," he says.

"And sadly that doesn't leave me much free time for doing other things."
