David James Elliott Last Impact will air on german Television on Wednesday 13.5. and Thursday 14.5. at 8.15 p.m on SAT 1 Phone Interview with David James Elliott. It took a while 'till we could be sure that David James Elliott is on the other side of the phone. With a silent, little exhausted sounding voice the canadian actor's voice is on the phone. He sounds like he's just back from his exhaustin World-saving-mission, which he just has finished filming as an Astrophysic Alex Kittner. Last Impact which will air on Wednesday 13.5. and Thursday 14.5. at 8.15 p.m on SAT 1. With 48 years, Elliott says, the physical body condition has noticiable changes. But the sportive Model athlet, who has with his his longlasting TV series, JAG, a faithful german audience, knows about the responsibility of an actor to his audience: the familyfather always has a nice self ironic sentence on his lips. Here comes the first picture.. Teleschau: you have been filming in an international coproduction for the Last Impact. Was it a thrilling experience? DJE: Yes, it was. It was the first time I was working with german colleagues. Especially with Benjamin Sadler we had a lot of fun together and became good friends. We're both fans of fishing and together we wiped out a lot of fish ports along the canadian coast. TS: have you been in Germany Berlin for filming? Did you get to know germany? DJE: No, sorry. I have been only once on german ground, in the airport in Frankfurt and it was terribly cold that I was afraid of leaving the building. I have been in Austria, but that's not Germany, right?
TS: No,not really.. Elliott: If you invite me, I'll come right away. Unfortunately work never has sent me there, though my l ittle brother is married to a german. But although this chance wasn't happening to me. TS: For the Last Impact the international teamwork was working very well together. Elliott Yeah, and you know what? That's the new way. The whole world is linked up , the whole world is getting closer together. The mankind ( human race?) is a global business today. TS: You're living as a canadian for many years in the USA, is there global world working in ordinary days? Elliott: I came to LA in 1989, so I live in a foreign country for awhile and yes it is working fine. It was a business neseccary. From Canada you only get to smaller roles ( parts?) the important decisive things happen here in LA. The the weather is better here. TS: So you see differences in canadian to american way of life? Elliott: In my opinion there is a difference between Canadians and Americans. We know everything about the USA, the Americans know nothing about us. The degree of unknowing that they show is always baffling, but here are a lot of clever and cultured people living in the USA.
TS: Do you have any example for their unknowledge? Elliott: Not really, but it is so.. in Canada you grow up with american culture, you are watching american movies, american TV and listen to american music. This culture is covering nearly everything. Therefore it is difficult for a neighborhood country to envelope ( build up ) an own identity. TS: Both of your children are US citizen. Don't you have the fear that their canadian roots of the family will go down? Elliott: My own roots are even a little deeper, my father is a Bahamian, but yes, I think it's worth having both passports for my kids, the American and the Canadian. TS: On TV you're a single father of two kids. Do you think you could handle that in real life too? Elliott: I hope I'll never have to deal with that. It looks like an enormous challenge. The kids in the movie are nearly the same age. Mine are 6 and 16 and so both are differently strenuously, beyond everything else my six year old gets me to my knees easily. I can't cope with him.
TS: What kind of a father are you? More the strong despotic, or more the buddy type? Elliott: I'm one who gets things done. I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty, that's for sure. My kids and I are spending a lot of free time together. For the little one I'm his pal, not his best friend, but his buddy. When I was filming JAG I've not had much time. I was working often 'till the middle of the night so it was a burden for my daughter. I've not been there for her that often I wished I had. Today it is more relaxed. My Credo always is more Quality than Quantity also for the education.
TS: Your children must be proud to see on TV how Daddy is saving the world. Elliott: Therefore you must ask themselves. Sometimes their comments are friendly, but especially my six year old , can be brutally honest, he holds nothing back.
TS: I read, that you were very interested in Astronomy in preparation for Last Impact. Elliott: Absolutely. During my research for the role I realized how realistic those scenarioes are. Humans are thinking the earth is a safe place, but after all I have read, in a minute it can be erased all the time.. it's like a lottery.
TS: Do you belong to those people who are waiting for the big apocalypse? Elliott: No, I don't belong to those. I'm more a fatalist. What will be, will be. If a catastrophe will happen there isn't much David James Elliott could do.
TS: Not only meteors are the reason for danger for the earth also the climatic changes. Is this soemthing you are aware about? Elliott: I see it differently. Some see it very dramatic, other it's not that bad. My own position is: Be carefull. We do in our household what's possible. If there is really something we can do to control the climate changes we should.
TS: Has the topic environmental protection arrived to the USA yet? It wasn't some years back. Elliott: I think so. There is a considerable awareness for it. That you have to do something to protect things. and keep things. I love the nature and it would be a disaster if it would go down..
TS: You look like a nature guy, you love fishing, you did the Hawaii Triathlon in 2005. You can call yourself an Ironman. Elliott: It was 13 hours of strenuousness ( endevour ?) but it was worth it all. It was a big experience which I'd like to do again. But I messed up my knee, that`s why I have difficulties with running. My activities at this time are swimming and biking, so I'm more a Du-athlet than a Triathlet.
TS: Is it necessary for action actor to be sportive and athletic? Elliott: It' s not necessary when it comes to getting a job. But I can say for sure that I can cope with everyone in Hollywood. TS: Really? Elliott: Sure. I don't only have a big mouth, there's action following.
TS: That fits with you working as a doorman. Elliott: That's right. During my education in Theater school I was working as a doorman for a club in LA and I also did this job in NY. I had some dangerous looking colleagues there, hard guys and I told them if it's getting trouble here, don't count on me. I'm only here to look impressive (or imposant ) and not to get stabbed or shot. TS: That`s good impression. In Munich where they had build up this job, they going to write down their memories. Do you remember some experience? Elliott: Each night was an experience. Once two dark types wanted to get in the club, but it was filled and I didn't want them in. They gave me some money and I said Ok, but behave yourself. After only 20 min, they were thrown out and the owner was red faced with anger, they had started a "Schlägerei,", (sorry can't find the right translating for it...maybe fight???) Ok, it's not a really good story.. TS: Oh yes it is. It makes things looking very realistic. Elliott: Doorman is a good job. You get paid for going out in the evening and afterwards there were always girls to get in touch with. I've not been alone often in those days.
TS: You've been a real daredevil. Elliott: Yes, I was. I've been a long time "The Rebel without a car". I've always been there for a good idea from my pals. We only wanted to have fun.
TS: Is there something left from the Rebel in your early days? Elliott: Deep inside there is a little bit., but I've calmed down and got settted. I don't drink much alcohol since 20 years. I put my energy in sports and hope to reach an old age. The years didn't go by without leaving marks, the wild years are over. I don't want to give my children a bad example. They're thinking that Daddy always was a respectable and straight type.
