Moonlight Encounter with Dashing David May 1997
|
"Man with the bod floors another admirer..."
Midnight, moonlight and the man with laughter in his voice. That's how I'll always remember David James Elliott.
And of course there's that wonderful chest which fills the screen when he swops his navy uniform for a towel and goes into the shower. But then I'm sharing him with thousands of others who turn their hungry eyes to SABC3 on Friday nights when JAG comes on.
But the moonlight and midnight was reserved just for me . . .
It's no secret women swoon over David James Elliott. Everyone's crazy about that smile - and bod.
Great news for South American fans is David is here this week to be master of ceremonies at the glittering Loerie Advertising Awards ceremony.
But long before he set foot on SA soil, the man voted one of the world's 50 most beautiful by America's People magazine had claimed a victim here.
His agent arranged our telephonic interview and it became a nightmare of uncertainty and hours of waiting beside the telephone. The agent was in Los Angeles (nine hours behind South Africa) and David was on a promotional tour of Australia (eight hours ahead of us). When David and I eventually "got together", it was early morning in Australia, dusk in LA and midnight here.
The instant I heard his voice, all traces of tiredness slipped away and I forgot about the cold tiles under my bare feet. The moonlight lay in silver pools on the floor and I was floating among the stars.
"Of course I am excited about my visit to your country," he said "But I'm sure no one would be so impolite as to say they weren't." I could actually hear him laughing at me. "No, seriously - it'll be my first visit to Africa. Everyone's told me how wonderful it is and now I'll be able to discover it for myself."
It'll also be the first time in four years he and his wife, actress Nanci Chambers, will be having a holiday alone together. Their little girl is staying with her gran so her parents can have a second honeymoon.
Sigh
And how does Nanci handle all the attention from female admirers? "She's an actress herself so she knows how things work," David said. "In any case, we were already married before I became well-known in the series and I never made a secret of how I felt about my wife."
David (36), born in Toronto, Canada, is level-headed about his success - and about the fact he was singled out as one of the world's most beautiful people. "I haven't noticed myself getting preferential treatment in hotels or restaurants. It doesn't actually mean that much," he laughed.
He said he enjoyed the attention from his fans, read every letter and made sure a signed letter or autographed photo was sent to each one to make them happy.
"My favourite letter came from a woman over 90. She wrote if she'd been just a little younger, she'd have eaten me up with a teaspoon, bit by bit."
Mmm. . .
