My DJE Story

DJE posing with fan

DJE was often approached by fans. He was super nice and super friendly. He was always willing to stop to give an autograph, scribbling his name on whatever was presented to him, or pose for a picture, always bending so as not to tower over shorter fans in the photo, and always giving a big smile. The gallery following this foursome was small, basically the wives or girlfriends, and my friend and me. There were always others around, but the five of us were the only ones following to every hole, cheering on every hole and always there.

At one point, when all the players, caddies, wives, etc. were walking from the green to the next tee, I found myself walking right next to DJE. Entirely by accident, of course! I asked DJE about the recently aired episode, Cabin Pressure, in which he was trapped in rising water. He groaned, and indicated that it was one of the worst things he had done. He said he was in the water for 7 days, and that he had caught pneumonia as a result of it, and had been sick all during their Christmas break. He then said the water was filthy, he swallowed mouthfuls several times, and he did not even want to think about all the junk he had swallowed. DJE said there were at least 20 production personnel in the water with him and the other actors. I can imagine! He then said, "I didn't get to see it yet. How did it look?" I told him it looked great - very realistic. I even, tongue in cheek, offered to loan him the tape I had made Tuesday night. Yeah, right! Then he had to go hit the ball, and we were off again.

DJE with fans

DJE often made poor shots, but once in a while they were really bad and he would hide his head in his hands or hang his head. I felt so badly for him, but he never lost his cool or his sense of humor, and I realized he was doing what he should be doing - having fun and enjoying playing golf on some of the most beautiful courses in the world! It's not like he has a lot of time to practise his golf game with his schedule, and even the pros don't hit every shot the way they would like. It's a very challenging game!
