My DJE Story

Friday, February 4, 2000 - Spyglass Hill

As I arrived back at Spyglass on Friday morning I prayed for good weather, but it was not looking good. Just as I was walking past the 10th tee, DJE was standing by a golf cart already loaded with his clubs. There was no caddie in sight again. Finally he got in the cart and he was taken to the 14th fairway, where he had to wait until 10:00 am. and the horn to get started again. He was out there a few minutes ahead of us, as we had to walk out to the point where play would resume that day.

DJE and young caddie

When we arrived there was a "young" girl standing next to DJE's bag. She kind of looked like she might be a fan, and we wondered what was up with her. She did not have a caddie's vest on or anything indicating she was a caddie, but she was looking awfully possessive of that golf bag… At about 5 minutes before ten, DJE's caddie showed up. He was driven up to the fairway in a golf cart, and started apologizing, saying he was sorry he was late. I did not hear the discussion, but DJE basically told him he was through, and to just leave. I guess being late two days in a row was too much for DJE.

DJE and young caddie The caddie was not happy, and stuck around awhile to try to talk to DJE, but DJE stuck to his guns and the caddie finally handed over his vest and left. The girl donned the vest and began caddying for DJE. She looked like she was in Seventh Heaven.

Later on I found out the young lady was a student at the Defense Language Institute who had been volunteering as an ecology worker (picking up trash), and when DJE had asked for a volunteer, she was in the right place at the right time. She walked past me and someone asked her, "How's your back?" She replied, "Hey, we're Navy, we can handle it!" Quite a coincidence!
